February 14 Coalition: The Death of Hajj Musa Al-Masri in Kuwaiti Prisons Is a Heinous and Condemnable Crime
In the Name of Allah, the Most Compassionate, the Most Merciful
We received the news of the death of Hajj Musa Al-Masri (68 years old) inside Kuwaiti prisons with profound sorrow and grief. He passed away after enduring a long struggle with illness under harsh detention conditions, while the authorities allegedly refused to provide him with the necessary medical care despite his advanced age. This, in our view, constitutes a heinous crime for which the Kuwaiti government bears responsibility, as it has pursued a systematic policy of deliberate and arbitrary medical neglect against political detainees.
The Kuwaiti government bears full and direct responsibility for the death of Hajj Musa Al-Masri. He was arrested in November 2021 as part of a wide-ranging campaign that targeted the head of the charitable committee to which he belonged, along with its members. According to the coalition, the arrests were carried out without any official arrest warrants and without clear legal charges being presented during the initial days of detention, constituting a blatant violation of the law and of all international human rights conventions.
While strongly condemning this grave incident that claimed the life of Hajj Musa Al-Masri—whose only alleged “offense” was his charitable activities and his affiliation with the Shi’a faith—we reaffirm our full solidarity with all political detainees in Kuwaiti prisons. We call for the immediate release of all individuals detained in connection with freedom-of-expression and charitable-work cases, and for an immediate end to the policy of medical neglect in all Kuwaiti detention facilities.
We pray that Allah grants Hajj Musa Al-Masri the highest ranks in Paradise among the martyrs, the truthful, and the righteous, and that He grants his family and loved ones patience and solace.
