Statement: The Supreme Council for Women’s Silence on the Arbitrary Revocation of the Citizenship of 22 Women Is Complicity and Whitewashing of the Regime’s Decisions
In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful,
We condemn in the strongest terms the decision to revoke the citizenship of 69 Bahraini citizens on political grounds. We also denounce the inclusion of 22 women in this decision by association—that is, without having committed any offense.
Punishing women and depriving them of their right to citizenship on the basis of charges unjustly attributed to their husbands—who were not even tried on these charges before the decision was issued—is an extremely dangerous matter. It exposes the falsehood of the ruling regime’s claims of protecting women’s rights and sheds light on the role of the so-called “Supreme Council for Women,” which has issued no objection to this arbitrary and unjust decision, thereby placing itself under legal accountability for performing a role that supports the regime against the people.
We express our full solidarity with the women whose citizenships have been unjustly revoked, and with their honorable families. We affirm that this citizenship is an inherent right of theirs and was never, and will never be, a favor granted by the ruling regime.
