As a result of the pressure of the Twitter campaign “Sick Prisoners in Bahrain”, al-Khalifa regime was forced to release a number of these detainees.
At dawn on Wednesday, 22 January 2020, some prisoners of conscience were released including : Elias al-Mulla, Mohammed Faraj and Hussein Abdulaziz, whose health conditions deteriorated in prison.
The campaign, which called by the Bahraini opposition on Saturday, January 18, 2020 under the hashtag “Sick Prisoners in Bahrain”, witnessed a wide interaction by human rights organizations, activists and social media users , who tweeted about the suffering of detainees in the prisons and cited examples of these patients, stressing the need to convey their complaints and messages to the international community, with the fear of being denied treatment by the regime.
The February 14 Youth Coalition also dedicated a series of tweets in the campaign entitled “Expose the crimes of Al-Khalifa regime against our loved detainees who are suffering in its prisons,” saying that the regime’s prisons are full of more than 5,000 prisoners who have been imprisoned and tried in courts that are not legal.
The added that most of those sick prisoners are suffering from chronic diseases , including Elias Mulla, a cancer patient, Mohammed Faraj, who has multiple sclerosis, Fadel Abbas, patient with lupus, as well as detainees with allergies, Sickle and other diseases, including symbols and leaders.
