British High Court Waives Immunity of Bahrain in an Espionage Case on Oppositions

On Wednesday, 8 February 2023, the High Court in London decided to waive the diplomatic immunity of the Government of Bahrain on charges of spying on the computers of a number of political activists, including Dr. Saeed al-Shehabi and the journalist Moussa Abed Ali.

According to Reuters, the verdict came after the case brought by Al-Shehabi and Abed Ali as a result of the hacking of their laptops with the ‘’FinSpy’’ spying program, which accessed their files and led to monitoring their communications since 2011 and spying on their work with political prisoners in Bahrain.

Reuters pointed out that Bahrain had claimed immunity by claiming that no alleged hacking had taken place in Britain, and that the alleged psychological damage did not amount to personal injuries, while Al-Shehabi and Abed Ali are seeking compensation for such psychological damage caused by espionage.

British Court judge ‘’Julian Knowles’’ had rejected Bahrain’s claim, which means that the case can be pursued in London – Reuters reports.
