The Women’s Committee of the February 14 Youth Coalition of the February 14 Revolution strongly condemns the Azerbaijani government’s efforts to impose what it describes as “secular” measures on society, thereby seeking to prohibit religious expressions, including the hijab, and proceeding to ban it in public schools.
This arbitrary measure, which appears to have been instigated by the Zionist entity, targets Islamic religious identity. Under this measure, female teachers and students are prohibited from entering schools wearing the hijab on the grounds that it violates the new school uniform regulations imposed following this decision.
We hereby declare our full solidarity with Muslim women and girls in Azerbaijan. We affirm that this repression constitutes a violation of freedom of religion and belief, as guaranteed by international conventions and laws. It also contradicts women’s freedom and their right to practice their religion and observe its rites—a right that women’s rights institutions frequently profess to uphold.
In Islam, wearing the hijab is a religious obligation, and no decision issued by any authority claiming legal legitimacy can prohibit it. Any infringement upon its sanctity necessitates raising our voices and expressing our rejection by all available means.
We call upon all humanitarian and human rights organizations, particularly those concerned with women’s rights, to adopt a firm position and take urgent action to put an end to these serious violations against Muslim women in Azerbaijan.
