Event of the Week (Saturday, August 1, 2026): The “Bahrain Shield” Exercise Exposes the Contradictions of Tyrant Hamad
Bahrain’s ruler, Hamad bin Isa, showed particular interest in the joint military exercise dubbed “Bahrain Shield.” However, the blatant propaganda surrounding the event placed Hamad in a series of contradictions that exposed the scale of the strategic predicament facing both him and his regime, which remains dependent on foreign powers.
On July 28, Hamad stated that the “Bahrain Shield” exercise reaffirmed the unity of the Gulf states. While receiving the credentials of newly appointed ambassadors, he described the situation in the country as “normal.” At the same time, however, he warned of “frontlines of confrontation,” claiming that his regime stood “on the right side” and had prevented escalation. This contradicts the Al Khalifa family’s persistent hostility toward both Iran and Bahrain’s Shiite population.
Observers interpret this inconsistent rhetoric as evidence of the Al Khalifa family’s inability to formulate a coherent strategic assessment of the developments unfolding across the region. They argue that Hamad’s speech—combining the claim that conditions in Bahrain are “normal” with boasting about his regime’s leadership of a military exercise bearing Bahrain’s name—serves as a revealing example of the country’s deepening crises resulting from its involvement in the aggression against the Republic and the repercussions for domestic security. Among the latest indicators, they cite the relocation of Formula One races to Malaysia, in addition to Bahrain’s alignment with external alliances, including the U.S.-Israeli alliance, the Saudi-led coalition announced in relation to the Bab al-Mandab Strait, and its alliance with the extremist militias led by al-Julani.

Despite its extensive reliance on foreign powers, Hamad still appears unconvinced that he enjoys sufficient external protection, particularly in light of the strategic capabilities demonstrated by Iran in confronting U.S. aggression, its success in dismantling U.S. bases and military assets spread across Bahrain and the wider region, and its ability to deprive those forces of providing security for Gulf regimes.
Analysts attribute Hamad’s contradictions to a deep sense of insecurity and anxiety about his political future. At the conclusion of the “Bahrain Shield” exercise, Hamad’s rhetoric was not only internally inconsistent but also revealed what they describe as the profound crisis facing his rule. Wearing military attire, Hamad addressed Iran in a speech that included language interpreted as an appeal for restraint, intended to deter attacks against the U.S. military presence in Bahrain. Nevertheless, according to these analysts, Hamad continues to maneuver within what they describe as “a circle of lies.”
