Report by Tijan Al-Watan: Temporary De-escalation in the Prison Pending the Transfer of Juvenile Detainees from Building 2
The account Tijan Al-Watan published a report on the repercussions of the violent assault that took place in Jau Central Prison on Sunday, February 22, 2026.
The report stated that Jau Central Prison witnessed a state of intense anger following an incident in which several criminal inmates of Syrian nationality, armed with bladed weapons, attacked a group of juvenile political detainees in Building 2. In response, detainees exited their buildings in condemnation of the assault and carried out an angry protest outside Building 12. This prompted the deployment of large numbers of security personnel to suppress the protesting detainees.
The account cited private sources from inside the prison as saying that the detained figure, Professor Abdulwahab Hussain, intervened to calm the situation. He first went to the clinic to check on the injured young detainee, confirmed that his injury was not severe, and accompanied him back to the building with the rest of his fellow detainees. He then proceeded to Building 2, where he sat with the detainees, worked to calm them, and discussed their demands. He subsequently conveyed those demands to the prison administration.
An agreement was reached with the administration to isolate all of them together in a separate room, on the condition that they would be transferred on Monday, February 23, 2026. This decision was formally documented in writing, and the Professor obtained a copy of the written document, which included a commitment to transfer all juvenile detainees to other buildings.
The report further stated that the Professor then went to Building 5 and afterward to Building 12, where he held discussions with detainees regarding their overall conditions, not limited to the incident involving the juveniles. The detainees agreed to grant the prison administration until today to implement the transfer decision, while affirming their determination to escalate their protest if the administration failed to fulfill its promise and honor its written commitment.
