Urgent Statement: Bahraini Opposition Forces Demand the Immediate Release of “Professor Hassan Mushaima” and Enabling Him to Receive Treatment According to His Own Will
In the Name of God, the Most Merciful, the Most Compassionate
The opposition forces in Bahrain are following with profound concern and condemnation the reports regarding the severe and dangerous deterioration in the health condition of the prominent national figure and prisoner of conscience, Professor Hassan Mushaima (78 years old), who has been forcibly disappeared in prisons for fifteen years and is suffering from the consequences of illnesses that have worsened as a result of medical neglect.
His family published, yesterday, Friday, 19 December 2025, alarming details about the deterioration of his health condition, while he is being held at the Muharraq Specialized Healthcare Center.
As we closely monitor these developments with grave concern, we affirm the following points:
Professor Hassan Mushaima has been returned to his place of isolation while in a critical health condition and suffering from severe mobility impairment. He is experiencing acute pain beyond what his seventy-eight-year-old body can endure—pain that has deprived him of sleep and placed his body in a state of constant trembling, according to his family’s report. This constitutes a further deepening of his suffering and a direct threat to his physical safety.
This inhumane conduct demonstrates the existence of a deliberate failure in handling the professor’s deteriorating health condition. It comes as part of a policy of vindictiveness and retaliation aimed at prolonging his suffering and depriving him of appropriate treatment, amid systematic concealment and attempts to pressure him into breaking his will, forcing him to abandon steadfastness and refuse compromises on freedom.
The opposition forces strongly condemn this deliberate medical neglect and mistreatment. We denounce the continued detention of Professor Mushaima under inhumane conditions and his deprivation of food and drink, despite suffering from diabetes—an act of retaliation that reflects a complete absence of humanity and a reckless disregard for his life.
What Professor Mushaima (may God grant him relief) is enduring is the direct result of a policy of slow killing. He has effectively been held in solitary confinement for more than four years, deprived of his most basic human rights, as part of a systematic physical liquidation carried out under the pretext of medical quarantine.
Accordingly, we hold the authorities fully and completely legally and morally responsible for the life of Professor Hassan Mushaima (may God grant him relief) and for any harm that may befall him. We affirm that his continued detention—while he is exhausted by chronic illnesses and acute pain—is behavior devoid of moral values, indicative of a retaliatory policy, and a flagrant violation of all international covenants and treaties.
We further demand the immediate and unconditional release of Professor Hassan Mushaima, to enable him to receive medical treatment according to his own will and to obtain dignified care among his family.
