Weekly Statement: Bahrain’s Independence Anniversary – A National Opportunity to Launch a Constitutional Movement Against Tyranny and Foreign Dependence
Issued by the Political Council of the February 14 Youth Revolution Coalition, this is the weekly statement:
In the Name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
The people of Bahrain commemorate Independence Day on August 14, a proud national occasion that stands tall in the face of all the distortions and falsifications targeting our national history. The Political Council of the February 14 Youth Revolution Coalition calls for a united stance on this occasion and urges reflection on the events of the past 55 years. This period has been marked by the ruling gang’s sabotage of a nascent experiment that had the potential to establish a sovereign constitutional state—an experiment aborted due to regional and international conspiracies that sacrificed people’s rights to freedom and sovereignty in exchange for appeasing tyrannical regimes and serving colonial ambitions.
On this occasion, we emphasize the following key points in our weekly position:
—
1. We stress that the only viable path for Bahrain to emerge from the tunnel of tyranny and foreign subservience is through embracing the right to self-determination, as enshrined in international covenants. This right was exercised in March and April 1970, when the United Nations intervened to ascertain the will of the people regarding the future of their country. This same path remains the one our people have held onto since the first constitutional coup in 1975 and the second in 2001. Over the years, the people have expressed their will through popular petitions, mass demonstrations, and the demands of the opposition for democratic transformation and an end to the dictatorship and corruption that derailed the dream of building an independent, democratic Bahrain.
—
2. While we view the international community with deep suspicion and mistrust—given its impotence in enforcing its charters and standing with oppressed peoples, as proven by its blatant failure in the face of the genocidal starvation war in Gaza—we nevertheless call for a return to the UN envoy Vittorio Winspeare Guicciardi’s 13-page report, issued in May 1970, which confirmed that the majority of Bahrainis desired recognition of their identity within an independent and free state, able to determine its own foreign relations. We believe this report can form a foundational reference for resuming a new constitutional movement aimed at securing our people’s right to self-determination.
—
3. We affirm that the current situation in Bahrain is more dire than at any point before or after independence. Injustice and violations have intensified, national sovereignty has eroded, and the constitution no longer represents the people’s voice or free will. The Al Khalifa tribe has seized control over all state affairs, citizens’ dignity is trampled in broad daylight, and even expressing one’s religious identity and authentic heritage has become a crime under Khalifi laws. Our land has been violated by foreigners, mercenaries, occupiers, and Zionists, turning Bahrain into a military base for the forces of evil to orchestrate their crimes across the region and the world.
—
4. We call on national forces to revive the constitutional movement, which was the core of national struggle before and after independence, and especially during the coup against the 1973 social contract constitution. This movement was rich with national conferences and legal frameworks that supported constitutional demands. We urge the revitalization of this honorable movement and its transmission to the current generation as a glorious chapter in the nation’s history.
—
5. We strongly denounce the recent moves by Interior Minister Rashed Al Khalifa, particularly his suspicious visits to select areas. These actions serve only to underscore the absence of a true national state in Bahrain. The country remains hostage to a sectarian agenda led by this criminal tribe, which continues to oppress the indigenous population and threaten their identity and religious practices under false slogans like “identity reinforcement”—which in reality means loyalty to the tribe, submission to repressive institutions, and absolute obedience to occupiers and colonial projects. This is complete enslavement, which the free people of Bahrain utterly reject, having offered generations of sacrifice in pursuit of a free homeland where hope does not tremble. They continue their struggle with unwavering resolve until their rightful dreams and aspirations are fulfilled.
