The National Popular Petition Commission issued a statement No.10 on Thursday, August 15, 2019. It stated that although there were political tension and harsh security conditions in Bahrain, the criminalization of the signing of the popular petition that demands the election of a Constituent Assembly, storming and destroying the signature centers and blocking its official website, more than 81,000 citizens were able to sign the petition, which seeks a better Bahrain and a better life of justice and equality for the indigenous people (Shiites and Sunnis) and coexist peacefully.
It explained that the number of signatories to the petition on the ground has reached 39,120 citizens, while the number of signatories to the petition electronically reached 42,437 citizens, in addition to a large number of citizens who were unable to sign because of the circumstances surrounding the process of collecting signatures.
The Commission stressed that the brave signatories of this petition have called on the United Nations to support the initiative of holding free elections in Bahrain, and to establish a Constituent Assembly that drafts a new constitution. They underlined the importance of a political system that will emerge Bahrain from the tunnel of the current oppression and political oppression, and preserve its security, development and help stability.
It added that the petition should be based on the people’s attainment of all their political rights in a democratic environment that is not based on color, sect or ethnicity, and put an end to their bleeding, where they suffer from a lack of human rights and the monopoly of power and wealth, while the people live injustice, poverty and oppression.
The National Commission for Popular Petition extended its thanks and gratitude to all signatories of this petition and their challenge to all repressive measures, stressing that it is in the process of completing its procedures for handing them over to the United Nations, in addition to submitting them to influential actors in the international arena.
