On April 19, 2019, Ali al-Shuwaikh, a prisoner of conscience, lodged a complaint with the European Court of Human Rights against the Dutch government, which deported him to Bahrain forcibly, where he was arrested, tortured, sentenced to life imprisonment and his nationality was revoked.
Al-Shuwaikh said in his complaint that the Dutch authorities had refused his asylum request in October 2018 on the grounds that he had not been shown that he would face the risk of persecution in the event of deportation, contrary to what happened to him upon his arrival.
According to a report by human rights organizations, he is a victim of a fake political trial.
The Dutch lawyer who filed the complaint with the court on behalf of al-Shuwaikh said that "the Dutch Immigration and Naturalization Service could have expected al-Shuwaikh to be at risk of political persecution and had previously warned human rights organizations against rejecting al- Shuwaikh's application for asylum.
This is the first time, according to the Dutch Refugee Council, in which an asylum seeker lodges a complaint with the European Court after his deportation from the country where he sought asylum.
Al-Khalifa court, which lacks legitimacy, is expected to rule on April 29 in the appeal of al-Shuwaikh, in the presence of representatives of the Dutch embassy.
